The mama kept her babies safe ❤️
Last month, a record-breaking snowstorm swept through Texas. As temperatures dropped to below freezing, Mayra Luna, a dog trainer, got a Facebook message about a mama dog and her puppies abandoned in a nearby park.
Luna quickly made her way over to the park to see if the dogs were still there, bracing herself for the worst. When she arrived, it didn’t take long for her to find the pups.

The puppies were just a few days old — their eyes were still closed. Luna was surprised to find that even though they’d been living outside in the freezing cold, they were healthy and chunky.
“My first reaction to seeing them was relief,” Luna told The Dodo. “When I first got word of them, I figured I would find them in a frail state, but their mom had done such a tremendous job of keeping them warm and fed.”
The mama dog seemed to sense that Luna was there to help. She ran right up to Luna to greet her.

Luna gathered up all the puppies, wrapping them in a towel and keeping them together so they could stay warm. With everyone safe in the car, Luna headed home with the little family in tow.
“I told their mom I had her babies and that they were all safe now, [and] that she had done a fantastic job,” Luna said.

When she got home, Luna turned her attention to addressing the dogs’ medical concerns. The puppies had mild frostbite on their toes, and the mama was pooping out plastic and foil. While she was in the park, she’d been so desperate for food, she’d been eating anything and everything she could find.
After some much-needed TLC, everyone was feeling much better within days. The mama gained weight and discovered her love for toys. The puppies have been thriving and growing more and more playful.

Luna likes to call the brave family the “Winter Warriors.” Each of them are named after fire: The mom is named Ember, and the babies are named Phoenix, Pyra, Kindle, Spark and Cinder.
