PART 2: «The Bride Was Waiting at the Hospital Door»
Esteban froze.
The monitor beside Yohandra began beeping faster.
âOur daughter?â he whispered.
Yohandraâs eyes filled with tears, but she was too weak to lift her hand.
âI tried to tell you.â
His breath caught.
The little girl appeared in the doorway behind him, still holding the torn photo against her chest.
Esteban turned slowly.
For the first time, he really looked at her.
Her eyes.
Her mouth.
The tiny scar near her eyebrow.
Everything in him collapsed.
âWhatâs your name?â he asked, voice breaking.
âLucia.â
Yohandra started crying silently.
âThat was your motherâs name.â
Esteban covered his mouth.
The little girl looked terrified now, like she had brought him the truth and still wasnât sure he would want it.
Then footsteps sounded in the hallway.
The bride appeared at the hospital door in her white gown and tiara, breathing hard, eyes wet with humiliation and fear.
âEsteban,â she whispered, âwhat is going on?â
Before he could answer, Yohandra grabbed his sleeve with the little strength she had left.
âHer father,â she whispered. âHeâs the one who kept your letters from me.â
Esteban stared at her.
âMy letters?â
Yohandra nodded weakly.
âHe told me you married someone else. He told me you didnât want the baby.â
The brideâs face went pale.
Behind her, an older man in a dark suit stepped into the doorway.
Her father.
Esteban saw him and understood.
The man who arranged the wedding.
The man who pushed him to forget Yohandra.
The man who had smiled while a child begged at the altar.
Lucia hid behind the door, shaking.
Yohandraâs voice broke.
âHe wants to take Lucia because she knows everything.â
The older manâs expression hardened.
âThat woman is confused.â
Esteban stepped in front of Lucia.
For the first time, the little girl reached for his hand.
He took it.
The bride looked at her father, horror spreading across her face.
âDad⊠what did you do?â
The man said nothing.
That silence destroyed him.
Esteban looked down at Lucia, then back at the bride.
âI was about to marry into the family that stole mine.â
The brideâs tears fell.
She slowly removed her ring.
Then she turned to her father.
âYou didnât protect me.â
Her voice shook.
âYou used me.â
Esteban lifted Lucia into his arms as the hospital staff rushed in.
Yohandra looked at them through tears, barely breathing but finally safe.
Lucia pressed her face into Estebanâs shoulder.
âAre you my dad?â
He closed his eyes and held her tighter.
âYes,â he whispered. âAnd nobody is taking you again.â
