Gen Z Think That The Thumbs-Up Emoji Is Rude And ‘Passive-Aggressive’

Gen Z wants people to stop using the thumbs-up emoji as they think it comes across as rude and ‘passive-aggressive.’

Generation Z, also known as Zoomers, refers to people born during the late 1990s and early 2000s, with some sources specifying between 1997 and 2012.

Some people from this generation are now taking to social media and calling out people who use the thumbs-up emoji.

Apparently, it doesn’t only make you look old but rude too.

The debate regarding the emoticon heated up when a Redditor asked others if they found it passive-aggressive too.

“I started an ‘adult’ job where we use Microsoft Teams to connect with each other for work,” the person explained.

“Currently, there are only a few emojis you can use to react to a message (unless of course, you respond, and can use any emoji).

“Most people at work use the ‘thumbs-up’ reaction all the time. I don’t use it much. I either ‘heart’ reactions or reply even if it’s a short ‘Great!’ or ‘Thanks!’ (I also feel like I use too many exclamation marks, but that’s a different story).

“Anyway, I think it’s normal to ‘thumbs up’ messages, but I still feel like it’s such an unsettling response. Does anyone else feel this way?”

Naturally, there’s been a wave of responses, with people divided on what the emoji stands for.

One person comments: “For younger people (I’m 24 for reference) the thumbs up emoji is used to be really passive-aggressive.

“It’s super rude if someone just sends you a thumbs up. So I also had a weird time adjusting because my workplace is the same.

“So yeah, it’s a generational communication culture difference.”

In agreement, a second user says: “I don’t know why but it seemed a little bit hostile to me, like an acknowledgment but kind of saying ‘I don’t really care/am not interested?”

“It’s not that odd to see it as passive-aggressive,” weighs in a third. “Just imagine how would it feel to go into your boss’ room, say something, and then see him turn to you, look you in the eye, and give you a thumbs up.”

However, others think people are reading far too much into the emoji, with one Redditor responding: “Passive aggressive? Are you being serious or facetious? It’s a thumbs up.”

“You’re thinking about it too much! Use whatever you want,” adds another.

According to the Emojipedia website, it’s acknowledged that the thumbs-up emoji ‘can be construed as being passive aggressive or sarcastic.’ It states that while some people may use it this way, it also represents a way of ‘quickly and earnestly expressing approval.’

Recently, Fox News host Emily Compagno weighed in on the matter and said she doesn’t care what Gen Z thinks about her and the emojis she uses in a recent debate on the channel.

She stated: “We have to somehow change our behavior and our silent communication because they’re a bunch of snowflakes? No, thanks.”

A man lived with his twin inside him for 36 years without knowing.

Sanju Bhagat, born in Nagpur, India, in 1963, appeared to be a regular child with no apparent medical abnormalities.

However, as he grew older and faced the challenges of making ends meet by working on a farm to support his family, his stomach began to expand to an alarming size.

This even prompted people to mistake him for being pregnant – but the truth was much more shocking than that.

Learn about another case where a three-year-old boy’s twin lives inside his stomach…

Despite the lack of proper nutrition, Bhagat’s belly continued to protrude, earning him the nickname of the ‘pregnant man’ in his small community.

Unfazed by the constant ridicule, he persevered, focusing on providing for his family and ignoring their pleas to seek medical attention.

Eventually, Bhagat’s bulging stomach reached a point where it pressed against his diaphragm, causing breathing difficulties.

In 1999, he was rushed to a hospital in Mumbai, where Dr Ajay Mehta initially suspected the presence of a tumour.

However, what they discovered inside Bhagat’s stomach was far more astonishing.

Upon incision, fluid spilt out, followed by the emergence of an actual human being.

History Defined reports a doctor saying: “He just put his hand inside and he said there are a lot of bones inside.

“First, one limb came out, then another limb came out. Then some part of genitalia, then some part of hair, some limbs, jaws, limbs, hair.

“We were horrified. We were confused and amazed… To my surprise and horror, I could shake hands with somebody inside. It was a bit shocking for me.”

Initially believed to be a case of ‘vanishing twin syndrome’, where one twin is absorbed by the other during pregnancy, it was later determined that Bhagat had a rare condition known as ‘fetus in fetu’.

In this extremely unusual occurrence, one twin develops inside the body of the other twin, functioning like a parasite.

Typically, the host twin would become aware of such an anomaly, but Bhagat had ignored the signs.

Following the removal of the twin, Bhagat, who had refused to look at the lump of flesh and hair that had inhabited his body for decades, attempted to return to a normal life.

Liberated from the presence of his twin, he resumed his daily work routine.

Some found it hard to believe, questioning the authenticity of the story, while others marvelled at the decades-long occurrence.

However, the good news is that mortgage advisors and lenders usually only look at statements from about three to six months before applying, which means there is still time to remove any ‘questionable’ references.

While some viewers have been left relieved to learn that references such as ‘SUGAR DADDY’ and ‘Wifey Dollaaaa’ will not become a roadblock in their property search, others have taken the advice seriously.

One person comments: “I send myself money. And say things like… Bribe money. Hush money. Never even considered this!”

Another adds: “Jesus, some of mine are horrific.”

It’s essential to ensure that any content you post online, including references to money transfers, is appropriate and doesn’t affect your image negatively.

While it might seem harmless to add a little bit of humour to the reference box when transferring money, it’s crucial to remember that it could harm your chances of securing a mortgage or even a new job.
