The world can sometimes be an incredibly harsh place.
Even though we learn not to judge others based on appearances and that true beauty lies within, many individuals still face relentless bullying simply because of how they look.
Melissa Blake, a journalist and writer, is all too familiar with this reality. Her insightful essays on disability, relationships, and pop culture have touched and motivated people globally, yet she still encounters cruel remarks from those who disapprove of her appearance.
At 38 years old, Melissa has had to endure being compared to a “blob fish” and a “potato with a face.”
Thankfully, she has found a powerful way to respond to her critics.
Melissa Blake syndrome
Melissa Blake was born with Freeman-Sheldon syndrome, a condition stemming from a genetic mutation that affects the movement of substances between cells during development. Throughout her life, she has undergone approximately 25 surgeries and relies on a wheelchair for mobility.
A common characteristic of Freeman-Sheldon syndrome is a distinct facial appearance, which may include a smaller, pursed mouth and reduced cartilage in the nose.
Unfortunately, Melissa’s unique features have led to cruel online harassment. On September 8, she took to Twitter to share her experiences with the hurtful comments she has faced. One individual compared her to a “blob fish,” while another referred to her as a “potato.”
Not letting her tormentors get her down
One commenter even suggested that she should be banned for being “too ugly.”
“People often ask why I’ve had such a hard time accepting my appearance and society’s standards of beauty. It’s comments like these that make me feel dismissed and unworthy,” Melissa shared.
“This is just another instance of the ableism that individuals with disabilities encounter daily, and it’s something I’m always striving to change.”
Despite the negativity, Melissa chose to rise above her critics, responding perfectly to those who said she should stop sharing photos: she posted even more.
“Recently, during another wave of trolling, some claimed I should be banned from sharing pictures of myself because I’m too ugly. So, I want to celebrate this moment with these three selfies…”
Her comeback tweet definitely made an impact. It has garnered 272,000 likes on Twitter, with fans celebrating Melissa’s bravery and strong character.
Additionally, Melissa’s work is thriving like never before – those who tried to bring her down have completely missed the mark!
Bullying has no place in today’s world, and it’s disheartening to think about the individuals who hide behind screens to harass others, all to mask their own flaws and insecurities.
Melissa Blake, you are a remarkable role model. We wish you all the best in your future endeavors.
