A woman who entered a seldom-used extra room in her mom’s house was stunned to find that 5,000 wasps had created a huge nest on the bed.
The nest measured 3ft wide and 1.5ft deep, and it was still growing. The bugs had gnawed through the mattress and pillows to construct it.
When pest control expert John Birkett arrived at the location, he realized it had been developing for several months. His client, living alone in a five-bedroom home in Winchester, Hampshire, hadn’t checked on the spare bedroom for quite some time. When her son opened the door and found the nest on the single bed he noticed that a window had been left open all along.
Birkett from Longwood Services stated: “We received a call as we usually do … but finding one in a bedroom – I thought that was odd. I opened up the door and couldn’t believe my eyes. The pillow was covered with this massive 3ft wasp nest while they were still busy working.”
“In my 45 years of experience I have never seen anything like this before. There must be around 5,000 wasps! It’s incredible that she didn’t know she shared her home with them.”
“I suited up like an astronaut and tried to eliminate as many as possible while they buzzed around me inside.” He mentioned there could have been up to 700 queen wasps within that nest.
He added that previously he only found nests about the size of tennis balls inside rooms.
Birkett eventually cleared out the area using spray to kill off all those pesky insects. He even managed to save her favorite blanket from being ruined!
Although he completed his task successfully, Birkett felt sad about so many dying insects. “It really looked like art; they worked hard on it! But she just said ‘No way – you’ve got to remove it.’ If they built this in just three-and-a-half months? That’s impressive right? They’re just tiny creatures.”
